Stuart was born in South Wales and graduated from the University of Southampton, gaining a BA (Hons) in music in 2000. Whilst at Southampton he studied piano with David Owen Norris and Andrew West. After gaining his PGCE in 2001, Stuart began his teaching career.

As well as being an accomplished pianist, he plays the bassoon, clarinet and church organ.  He plays at Holy Trinity Church, Ystrad Mynach, where he is also Choirmaster. As an accompanist, Stuart has had the opportunity to accompany soloists and choirs in venues throughout the UK including St David's Hall, Turner Sims Concert Hall and Theatre Brycheiniog.  In 2003, Stuart was appointed Musical Director of Ystrad Mynach Male Choir.
